The Research Triangle Park, often referred to as "Silicon Valley East" helps boost the area's economy with high-tech corporations from acrose the globe. It all started in 1965 with IBM. Located in the middle of the state, Triangle residents have easy access to top vacation destinations, including coastal attractions of the outer banks, Wilmington, Myrtle Beach SC, and the mountain areas of Asheville, Boone and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Cities/areas located near Research Triangle ParkRaleigh is the state capital and the second largest city in the state. Nicknamed the "City of Oaks". Home to North Carolina State University. Raleigh has become a culturally oriented community and hosts many entertainment events to suit diverse interests. Raleigh's population is around 300,000.
Holly Springs is located 12 miles south of Raleigh and lies between Apex and Fuquay-Varina. The current population is 9,652. It is experiencing growth generated by the attraction of the Triangle. Morrisville is on the verge of expansion due to its prime location between Cary, Raleigh-International Airport and Research Triangle Park. The town's convenience to the airport is a major drawing card to corporations. The current population is about 9,000. Chapel Hill & Carrboro together form the smallest points of the Research Triangle Point. Located 20 minutes from the Research Triangle Park and 45 minutes from Raleigh. Chapel Hill is also home of the University of North Carolina-CH (UNC). UNC is the nation's first and oldest state supported university (cir. 1795). The town's permanent population is 45,000 which swells to 66,000 when the university is in full session. Much smaller than its close neighbor, Carrboro has a population of about 15,500. It is also known for its thriving arts community, and for the largest system of on- and off-road bike paths in North Carolina. Durham is located 23 miles northwest of Raleigh and 12 miles northeast of Chapel Hill. With a population of over 177,650, Durham is North Carolina's fifth largest city. Durham is known as "The City of Medicine" due to its great medical facilities, and is home of Duke University, one of the nation's most outstanding private colleges.
